B43 WHAT’S IN A NAME

“I’ll fix those wipers for you,” said a tall guy leaning over our windshield. “Just come to Luxembourg.” Guy Maathuis, Vice President of the MG Car Club of Luxembourg, was one of the men attempting field repairs on our car at the Liege MG Day rallye. His suggestion wasn’t a bad idea since Luxembourg was just next door to Belgium. “Here’s my card,” he said. “I’ll see you tomorrow.” That pretty much settled what we’d be doing the next day.

TOURNAI SIGN As important as they were, the wipers were second in priority to a family question that had nagged at me for decades. As we were passing under an autoroute sign on the way to our family reunion, I asked Jean Francois, “Why did our family leave the city of Tournai and why did they change the spelling?” “They didn’t do either,” he said. B42 MG RALLYING BELGIAN STYLE

After our experience of automobile rallying in Great Britain you might think we’d not fall for the same situation. Well, guess again because here we were in Liege, Belgium about to embark on another trial of men and machines.

LIEGE GAREWe trailed behind Yolande and Georges Collet from their home to just outside Liege’s architecturally startling railroad station. It is the design of Santiago Calatrava, a Spaniard who happens to be both engineer and architect (as well as a sculptor and painter).

MG'S FRONT OF GAREIt was the perfect background for distinctly unmodern MG’s. Perhaps it’s the contrast that appeals to me. Read more »

B41 A FAMILY OF STRANGERS

JFRANCOIS & RAY IN MGThe day came to leave the Belgian towns of Comines-Warneton along the French border and travel to meet the rest of our family…the ones with the last name DeTournay. Jean Francois agreed to ride shotgun and navigate the way to Villereilles les Brayeux, a village south of Brussels. Louise was especially pleased to ride in Any’s car where she didn’t have to wear protective headgear and shout instructions over the wind noise. Read more »

B40 WE’RE IN BELGIUM…WE THINK

No, the title isn’t a play on that old movie, “If it’s Tuesday, this must be Belgium,” but not far from it. The ferry ride from Dover to Calais takes only one hour, barely enough time for a beer and a nap. We bounced down the ramp and set our wheels on French soil again…we think. Unlike 50+ years ago, there was no border guard to greet or stop us; no Carnet de Passage to stamp; no passport to approve. Just point the MG’s nose toward land and follow it.

We kept our eye out for the traditional border barriers between France and Belgium, expecting to show, at least, our driver’s license. Once again nothing. Not even a change in road surface to show we’d crossed into the land of beer and gaufrets. Finally we zoomed by a sign on the autoroute. In English it read, “You’re in Flemish country.” We had no idea that the European Union had gone so far as to strip a country of it’s border identity. First the Euro, now this.

WS DARDENNE HOME We arrived in time for dinner at the home of my second cousins, Any and Jean Francois Dardenne. Although we hadn’t seen them in twenty three years, e-mail and Christmas cards have kept us in contact and photos have reduced the shock of the aging process. Read more »

B39 FAREWELL TO ENGLAND

During most of our travels we’ve had the luxury of booking a hotel ahead…but not today. When in a corner we always turn to booking.com and it has delivered with varied choices each time.

OATLANDS PARK HOTELSuch was the case in Weybridge and booking.com came through with a grand hotel at a reasonable price. Of course, last minute bookings on a weekend are often rewarded with the lowest rate but, many times, nothing is available to book. It’s a form of roulette where the loser gets to spend the night in the MG. We hit the jackpot in the Oatlands Park Hotel, not minutes from the Brooklands Museum. Read more »
