B13 DAY TWO AT LE MANS

We stayed at the track at Le Mans until well past 10 PM Saturday. By then the race was only into it’s 7th hour. An Audi was leading with a trail of Peugeots in hot pursuit. The rivalry was still alive. We were safely in the Aston Martin hospitality center, finding ways to acclimate to the continuous din of cars passing just outside it’s doors. I found that a glass of wine or two helped settle the nerves while Louise chose constant conversation as her remedy. It was well past midnight when we crawled under the feather cover of our comfortable bed at Le Tertre.

Sunday morning dawned bright and clear. I spent a few minutes wiping the morning dew from the MG and got the weather report from our hostess, Corinne. “Possible rain” she said as we drove down the gravel driveway. During the 16 mile drive the wispy little clouds knitted themselves into a grey blanket overhead and darker clouds to the west seemed ominous to me.  Now for a decision.  Top up or top down?  Read more »

B12 WE MADE IT TO LE MANS

We have our credentials and are on our way to Le Mans.  First we need a car.

Aston Martin badges

Sorry for the lapses in the blog but we have been on the run.  Briefly, we left Paris by train on Thursday, destination Le Havre.  Met at the station by our most efficient and courteous shipping agent, Jeroen Walda.  The ship had just arrived so the car wouldn’t be available until sometime Friday.

LaThumiere ext

Rented a car & stayed at Le Thumiere, a lovely B&B in the Normandy area.  More about the stay later.

Walda & partner

Picked up the MG on Friday.  Some quasi-serious damage to the driver’s door and a crack in the windshield.  Jeroen said, “No problem.  It’s covered by insurance.”  Wait till they find out the paint costs $700 a gallon.  Left Le Havre for Le Mans at 5:00 PM using our GPS (now named Mlle. Recalculaire) for an incident-free trip to the Le Tertre B&B.  We had some differences with the GPS (not all her fault and more on that later) but found our destination long after the sun went over the yardarm. B11 OUR LAST DAYS IN PARIS

We’ve spent our last days in Paris just kind of bumming around. Aside from the obligatory morning trip to the boulangerie for croissants and a baguette of bread, we’ve been without assignment or desire to careen about Paris looking for our youth. In fact, we began taking a closer look at our home for the past week.

Rue 44 PernetyWe should clarify how our daughter came to live in Paris with her 14 year old son, Kade. Last summer her husband, Kurt, received a summons from the government for one year of military service. He has been in the naval reserve since college but never expected to be called to duty in another service branch. At age 47, he has spent the past year in Afghanistan as a member of the Army! Rather than wait out the time in Marin County, she chose to move to Paris and rented a small house/apartment at 44 Rue Pernety. The blue door is their entry to the building and bracketed by a pizza and shoe repair shop.  Paris winters are unpredictable and It was been a cold, difficult year for them both.  Read more »

B10 STROLLING TO AND THROUGH THE LUXEMBOURG GARDENS

The day dawned overcast with small patches of blue poking through. “There’s almost enough to make a pair of man’s pants,” Louise observed, which is her way of saying it’s going to be a nice day. It rained during the night meaning all nature’s things would be refreshed and in bloom, except us. Seemed like a perfect idea to walk to, and through, the Luxembourg Gardens just a short distance from our daughter’s home. I checked with the Maps software in the iPad and it promised a brief but brisk walk of 2.8 kilometers, barely 1.6 miles. Off we went.

Montparnasse TowerThe designated path took us right through the Montparnasse district and past the Montparnasse Tower, the highest skyscraper in Paris. It sits atop a major metro terminal where you can hop on underground trains headed for anywhere. The tower is accused, with good reason, of spoiling the photo shots of the Eiffel Tower and other historic landmarks. In a reasonably flat city, it just leaps from the ground and sticks out like the proverbial sore thumb Read more »

B09 ON BEING TOURISTS IN PARIS

Sunday was the day we chose to be tourists; map carrying, gawky, cross walk stumbling tourists lost on beautiful grand boulevards.

Boulevard des Capchucines

Even though we knew Paris quite well at one time, street names and bus routes had completely slipped out of our travel tips bag of memories and we were reduced to asking complete strangers how to get somewhere. In most cases they were from the U.S. and in Paris for the first time so were absolutely no help.
